Nowadays with the pound sterling sinking daily, UK region B discs are very good value, so having a region-free BD player allows you to get those discs as well.

Standalone BDP also means less wear and tear on your PS3. Plus, PS3 is a real power-hog and uses a lot of electricity, compared to standalone players. Also, if your PS3 is a phat, it can't output bitstream hi-def audio, only already-decoded LPCM. And unless you buy the optional remote, using Sixaxis controller as a remote is rather confusing.

Admittedly none of these are brilliant, 'killer' reasons to get a standalone BDP and by all means continue using your PS3 for BD playback if you don't have, and don't plan to get, a lot of BDs. But if you do, it sort-of makes sense to have a dedicated player for that purpose, rather than have your PS3 double-up.

In the early days of BD, PS3 was probably the best value-for-money BD player anyway, and even in absolute quality terms it did not lose out, but today standalone players do outperform the PS3. But again, this is not relevant if you don't have a big full HD display and good HT system that makes full advantage of the improved PQ and SQ that BD can deliver.

Of cos been enjoying my region free oppo since July last year. Budget constraint go for the oppo bd80 with region free mod. You can get local stock from audio iconic and it comes with 12 months distributor warranty.

How does UK version of Blu Ray compared to US version? In terms of picture quality, sound and packaging?

I think it is about $588, less than $600. Do ask for the backlit remote for the BD83 when you purchase the player.

Re: Official Blu-ray & movies chit-chat thread

Thanks for the info.

I am thinking of just getting a region B player, GBP 99 type. It's UK, don't have to worry about voltage and such. vPost has promo rate now, charges by actual weight (about 1.5kg only) and not volume.

Or just get a BD drive for PC and set it to region B. (Actually I already have one, just didnt set the region to B.)

Cheap cheap, good dah. There are many methods to gain region free. The drawback is maintaining multiple equipment.

No difference in most cases. Just in PAL format.

HD is HD, there is no NTSC or PAL. Those are analog broadcasting standards.

You sure those are real blu-ray and not dvd ripped from blu-ray?

Having said that, local Giant here also sells some China made BDs (Hollywood movies) at $19.90. Not sure real or not. I tried one (Asterix live action movie), quality is good (though English sub has some typo errors).

Bluemax also have a lot of Taiwan or China ones at $19.90 or $29.90 (they say those with special features are $29.90, I think it actually depends whether BD25 or BD50). Buy 5 get 1 free.

Their Taiwan BDs are not the latest though (I imported a lot on my own, the $15 types, like Swing Girls, they dont have yet).
