Nobody mentioned documentaries besides Planet Earth? Band of Brothers? Just got "The Universe", haven't watched it yet, but looks good from the trailers and reviews. Gonna get "Life" soon too.....

Re: Official Blu-ray & movies chit-chat thread

I generally only buy BDs for animated films or live-action films with a lot of good CG.

Anime-wise, I was blown away by the incredible beauty of Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone. I'm waiting for more affordable versions of Evangelion 2.22 and Summer Wars. Final Fantasy: Advent Children and Sky Crawlers are both very good show pieces.

On the Hollywood side, I'm waiting for the Shrek films (provided they release it in my lifetime). Ratatouille has fanastic detail, as does UP.

Strongly recommend live action movies that uses IMAX cameras to shoot. You get full delivery at the BD end. Solid example is Dark Knight. The presentation is absolutely DIFFERENT from what you normally see, and you can FEEL it! Basically the next best thing to being actually there self confessed photorealism whore here

I just finished watching Band Of Brothers. Good stuff.
Next will be The Pacific.

Metallica Dimes is good as well for Audio quality.
One of the best concert I ever seen on BD.

Re: Official Blu-ray & movies chit-chat thread

Some of those BDs mentioned (here and hoot thread), I am not sure if they can get the "wow!" reaction from people.

Like 300, BoB, BHD, Transformers... yes, first time you watch, they wow you, but that's cos of the movie itself, loud and explosive. Don't get me wrong, the video transfers are excellent, but they also presents faithfully the art direction of the movies - high contrast, dull color tones, high saturation, dark, grainy, etc.

I have heard many people complain about the video quality of 300, saying it is too grainy (com'on people, it IS supposed to be grainy!). I have seen many professional reviewers blasting Bay, Scott and fellow action directors for their visual styles.

Personally I like these movies and these BDs, but I wouldn't use them as demo though. On the other hand, these movies are crowd pleasers, maybe depends if the viewer is looking at the grains (they view of 'video quality', sigh, try impressing them with 'blacker than black') or CGI robots causing explosions everywhere. But movies like FF7:AC will always please with the photorealistic video quality.
